Palliative Care Summer School named „Palliative care: between theory and practice“ was held in Divcibare hotel, on Divcibare, May 8th – May 12th 2017, with the participation of doctors, nurses and social workers from 15 different primary and secondary health care institutions, and the representatives of the civil society.
The aim of Palliative Care Summer School was to improve participant’s knowledge and skills in the areas of effective communication, the assessment of patients’ / family members’ needs and to teach them how to improve those. Important topics were the control of most common symptoms and solving ethical issues that appear at the end of life.
There were several workshops. One of those was about common problems which were identified by the participants as the opstacle for better palliative care provission: insufficient number of employees, incomplete teams for palliative care in the home care service, but also in palliative care units, insufficient education of other professionals as well as patients and families, especially about the goals and possibilities of palliative care, unavailability of some essential drugs, bureaucracy that overwhelms professionals’ work or family members.
Center for palliative care and palliative medicine „BELhospice“ was established 13 years ago with aim to provide high-quality palliative care to cancer patients and their families and to educate professionals who participate in palliative care. Since then, BELhospice employees and their associates have held numerous courses and tens of professional meetings based on topics relevant to this field.
