Presence that changes life – the story of volunteer Damjan

Driven by a sincere desire to help fellow citizens who are often without adequate support, volunteer Damjan, who visits our users in their homes, brings comfort, understanding and strength with his presence exactly where it is most needed.

“Why did I decide to volunteer at the BELhospice center?

I decided to volunteer at BELhospis for two important reasons. The first is a personal desire to be with people who are going through the most sensitive period of life – the end. In those moments, they are often left alone or with their partner, while the family, although present, often cannot bear the burden of the situation. By helping them, I offer not only physical support, but also what is rarely mentioned – human proximity, understanding and presence.

Another reason is professional – as a psychologist, learning about palliative care is an invaluable experience. Every encounter brings a lesson, a challenge and an opportunity for growth.

Volunteering at BELhospis taught me something else: that changes do not come from above, but from people who are ready to give themselves. In a country where hospice is still developing, every step we take is part of future stability, every humane action lights the way for future generations.

That’s why I volunteer – because I believe that care, attention and dignity do not depend on the situation, but on our willingness to be there, honestly and wholeheartedly” – said Damjan.
